Mount Pleasant Shrewsbury Semi-Detached House Exterior

From Retro to Ready-to-Sell: Shrewsbury Property Photography

Inside, this Shrewsbury home still carried some of its 1970s character, from retro kitchen tiles to classic built-in cupboards. With the sellers’ help in staging rooms as stripped back as possible while they were still living there, and by carefully selecting angles, we showcased the home’s spaciousness and charm. The goal was to present it truthfully while making it as inviting as possible for prospective buyers.

Most people might see the dated interior and the torrential storm on the day of the shoot as problems, and they were challenges, no doubt. But as any photographer knows, a challenge is just an unsolved problem. Rain? No issue — the Canon 5D Mark IV and proper lensing can handle a storm, and I always bring a towel.

As the before-and-after images of the exterior show, the weather was against us. Yet every cloud has a silver lining: while we lost some light from the dark clouds, they created soft, even light through the windows, often better than harsh shadows on a sunny day.

This is the kind of creative license we accept in property photography: the only real “misrepresentation” here is the weather. You might ask, “Why not come back on a sunny day?” In practice, that introduces complexity, coordinating with the seller, getting images to the agent, and uploading to all platforms, which can lead to wasted time and effort. The trick isn’t waiting for perfect conditions; the trick is creating compelling images that stand out on Rightmove regardless of the heavens’ mood.

The Inside

Inside, the kitchen is the showstopper, for all the wrong reasons. No amount of Photoshop or AI editing could modernize it without bending the truth. But while it lacks in modernity, it more than makes up for it in space and potential. For a house of this size, the kitchen is surprisingly generous, and my job was to make that sense of space come across on camera.

Elsewhere in the house, the story was similar: dated, but full of potential, and as close to a blank canvas as you could get for a lived-in home. One advantage of mostly original fixtures and fittings is that they’re easy to replace when it’s time to refurbish. Our aim in the images was simple: yes, it’s old, but nothing a new kitchen and a fresh lick of paint couldn’t fix.

This property benefits greatly from professional photography. It’s easy for a seller or agent to shrug and think, “It’s a mess, who cares?”, but the right images reduce the intimidation factor for prospective buyers. They open the audience beyond people actively seeking a fixer-upper, and can even entice those who hadn’t considered a project before.
