Behind the Scenes of a Magazine Cover Shoot!

When I set out to capture professional headshots and editorial portraits for a magazine cover shoot, I always aim for images that not only look great but also tell a story. So, when I was approached to photograph Clive Margetts for an article in Acquisition Aficionado, I knew this was going to be an exciting shoot!

The Concept Behind the Shoot

Clive is an experienced business leader, and the article, titled “Boomers & Business Exits: A Ticking Time Bomb,” focuses on a crucial topic in the world of M&A. The goal was to create a strong, professional image that reflected his expertise while feeling approachable and engaging to readers.

The shoot took place outdoors, incorporating natural light and a distinctive architectural background to add depth to the image. One of the challenges was ensuring the setting complemented the article’s theme without distracting from Clive as the focal point. By using a mix of natural and off-camera lighting, I was able to highlight Clive’s expression while keeping the environment subtly present in the composition.

Capturing the Cover Shot

The final selection for the cover came from a series of shots where Clive stood confidently against a classic red telephone box—a striking contrast against the softer tones of the background. His relaxed yet professional posture, combined with the right lighting, made for a compelling image that resonated with the magazine’s editorial direction.

Seeing my photography featured on the front cover is a proud moment. While I always aim to deliver the best images possible, getting a cover placement is a great validation of the effort that goes into planning, shooting, and post-production.
